This was the case for American firms during the recent polar vortex that swept across much of the nation, hitting the Midwest and North East particularly hard. According to a report from The Associated Press, Planalytics Senior Vice President Evan Gold noted that the winter storm may have cost the United States economy $5 billion

"There's a lot of economic activity that didn't happen," Gold said, according to the source. "Some of that will be made up but some of it just gets lost."

One of the major reasons for the decline in economic output was the fact that many people simply couldn't get to their offices. For many businesses, that made the start of 2014 rather difficult, a negative sign for businesses that looked to kick the year off with a productive streak.
